How to Utilize Pressure Measurement Data?

Pressure transmitters are often designed for data collection in industrial field applications, capable of outputting standardized signals and providing control systems with stable, reliable measurement data. From the perspective of measurement principles, the pressure of the measured medium is not solely an isolated process parameter—it essentially reflects the combined characteristics of the medium fluid under both static and dynamic conditions. By fully leveraging the intrinsic relationship, it is possible to derive important process parameters such as liquid level and flow rate from the pressure transmitter’s measurements without adding extra sensors. The unique advantage makes pressure transmitters indispensable when building highly reliable measurement solutions in complex industrial systems.

Effectively Utilize Pressure Measurement Data for Other Industrial Parameters

Static Pressure Level Measurement

For a stationary liquid, the static pressure at any depth can be described by the liquid pressure formula P = ρgh. Based on the principle, the output signal of pressure transmitter exhibits a linear relationship with the liquid level height. The measurement approach is particularly suitable for complex operating conditions and applications requiring fast response. This type of measurement can be widely used in scenarios such as chemical storage tanks, pharmaceutical fermentation vessels and municipal wastewater sumps.

In industrial applications, submersible level transmitters and conventional pressure transmitters both operate on the static pressure measurement principle, but they differ in structure, mounting and suitable scenarios. Submersible level transmitters are compact and easy to install, with the sensor probe placed at the bottom of the liquid for extended periods. They are ideal for environments such as deep wells, water tanks and open storage vessels. Pressure transmitters are installed outside the vessel and can handle high temperatures and hygienic processes through measures such as diaphragm seal and remote capillary.

Differential Pressure Level Measurement

In a closed container with fluctuating gas-phase pressure, using only a pressure transmitter yields the sum of hydrostatic pressure and gas-phase pressure, which can not reflect the true liquid level. Therefore, a differential pressure (DP) transmitter should be applied, connecting the high-pressure side to the bottom (static pressure + gas-phase pressure) and low-pressure side to the top (gas-phase pressure only). By calculating pressure difference, the interference from gas-phase pressure is eliminated, yielding a signal that corresponds solely to the liquid level. This type of measurement is widely applied in chemical reactors, distillation columns and other applications where stable level control under pressurized conditions is required. For high temperature and aggressive media, dual-flange capillary system is typically configured to isolate the process medium from direct contact with sensing element, thereby enhancing the instrument’s long-term stability in extreme conditions.

Differential Pressure Flow Measurement

The base of DP flow measurement is that when a fluid flows through a throttling device (orifice plate, annubar, etc.), the variation of flow cross-section causes the flow velocity to change accordingly and creating a pressure difference across the throttling element that has a well-defined functional relationship with flow rate. By accurately measuring the pressure difference with a DP transmitter, the flow rate can be indirectly determined. Owing to its high level of standardization, excellent  adaptability, and suitability under complicated conditions, DP-based flowmeters hold an irreplaceable position in the steam and gases flow measurement with differential pressure transmitter plays a key role as the core sensing element.

Pressure transmitter is by no means a device that merely provides reading, its true value lies in the deep interpretation and flexible utilization of measurement data. Fully understanding and skillfully applying the physical relationships behind pressure measurement data can open up more efficient and accurate pathways for process control and system optimization.
